Christine's Story
Leavin’ On A Jet Plane
1970
After graduating from Pikesville High School in 1969, I took some classes at Catonsville Community Collége, worked full-time, saved my money, and left for Eugene, Oregon in June 1970. I attended the University of Oregon, married, and in 1978 we moved to San Francisco. I worked in non-profit arts management at a British Drama School in Berkeley, a performing arts museum, and made a change in 1999 to begin studies in social work.
My husband, Lee Smith, died of cancer in 2009. I moved to Lausanne, Switzerland to try a new life and obtained a one-year visa. I also taught English at an orphanage in Poland for four summers. It was incredible - beautiful land and kind, friendly people. I continued my French studies at a school for adult learners in Lausanne and volunteered at the Musée Ignace Jan Paderewski, a Polish pianist I had been studying and researching since 1985 in the village of Morges.
I returned to San Francisco and after a couple of years met my husband, Jim Duffy, and eventually moved to Ashevil...Expand for more
le, NC. After several years together we were married in 2015 at San Francisco City Hall then returned to Asheville. We love the mountains and all of the wildlife - especially the bears who come through regularly.
2020
My life has been music, research, reading, traveling, horses, and working with wonderful people. I have been very lucky with the usual ups and downs. Losing family, friends, and pets have been the most difficult. Being in SF during the HIV epidemic was horrific and I lost many friends and colleagues.
There have been many pets over the years who served as my children tho I think the present two boys (cats) think of us more as grandparents. I return to Pikesville occasionally to visit my sister who is 81. My brother died in 2009 four months before my husband. So ... life.
It has been good and I hope that we all make it thru Covid and can get back to our lives. I wish you all the best and have many fond memories of Pikesville. It’s been quite a ride!
Warm thoughts,
Christine
